TRAGIC TOT Body of missing toddler Mariah Woods, 3, is found at bottom of creek 25 miles from her house

The child from North Carolina, USA, was reported missing earlier this week with her family claiming she had been abducted by a stranger.

THE body of missing toddler Mariah Woods has been recovered from the bottom of a creek.

The whereabouts of the three-year-old have been a mystery since Monday morning.

Her family, from North Carolina, USA, said she had not been seen since the night before when she was told to go back to sleep.

Authorities said the body pulled from the waterway yesterday had not been formally identified yet but were confident it was the missing tot.

A spokeswoman for the FBI said investigating dive teams located the body in Holly Shelter Creek.

The waterway is about 25 miles from Mariah’s home in Jacksonville.

Earl Kimrey, 32, has been charged in connection with the death with his arrest warrant saying he had moved her body from the place where she died.

He is the live-in boyfriend of Mariah’s mother Kristy and shares the family home with her three children, including Mariah.

He was arrested yesterday morning, before the body had been found, and is currently being held in custody.

He also faces criminal charges regarding larceny, breaking and entering, and possession of stolen goods.

Earlier this week Mariah’s father, who is separated from Kristy, said he did not believe Kimrey’s story that the tot was abducted by a stranger.

Alex Woods told News Channel 12: “Someone just walked right up in there, grabbed the three-year-old out of the bed and she didn’t cry, she didn’t scream?”

He added: “Nobody heard anything? Four people in the house, two adults and two kids someone just comes up and snatches the baby and walks out?”

Officials Think Body of Missing North Carolina Girl Mariah Woods Found

A body believed to be of a 3-year-old North Carolina girl who was missing for six days was found in a creek on Saturday night, a day after the mother’s live-in boyfriend was arrested in connection with her disappearance, the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office said.

A child’s body, “strongly believed to be that of Mariah Woods” was found in a creek in neighboring Pender County, Onslow County deputies said in a statement.

Mariah was reported missing from her bedroom on Monday, which led to a massive multi-agency search that also included hundreds of volunteers.

An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death and to verify the girl’s identity, the statement said.

Onslow County deputies and the Federal Bureau of Investigation on Friday arrested Earl Kimrey, 32, who was held on bond of more than $1 million.

Officials said additional charges are possible against Kimrey, who was held on several charges including concealing a death and obstruction of justice.

Kimrey also faces burglary, felony larceny and possession of stolen property charges, a statement issued by the FBI and Onslow deputies earlier on Saturday said.

The statement did not say whether Kimrey had obtained a lawyer.

Evidence gathered during the investigation led investigators to believe that Mariah was dead, even before the girl’s body was found on Saturday night, they said.

Kimrey was the boyfriend of the Mariah’s mother, Kristy Woods, local media reported.

Woods said she put her daughter to bed at around 11 p.m. on Sunday, and said her boyfriend saw the girl about an hour later when the child got up and he had told her to go back to bed, WRAL, an NBC affiliate in Raleigh, North Carolina, reported.

The couple contacted the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office early the next morning to say the girl had disappeared, officials said.

A days-long search ensued with hundreds of police officers, military troops and volunteers searching the rural area around the family’s mobile home in Jacksonville.

North Carolina toddler’s body found; mom’s boyfriend charged with hiding death

The body of a missing 3-year-old North Carolina girl was found in a creek less than a day after her mother’s boyfriend was charged with hiding her body after knowing she didn’t die of natural causes, authorities said.

Investigators continue to stay tight-lipped about what happened to Mariah Woods. But they left little doubt Earl Kimrey knew how she died and was trying to cover it up. He was charged late Friday with concealing of death.

“It was too late to save Mariah the moment the 911 call came in,” FBI agent Stanley Meador said of the call the girl’s mother made Monday to report her missing. “The arrest warrants are public record and the records speaks for themselves. We will not discuss any details related to the homicide investigation.”

Kimrey removed the girl’s body from the place where she died and knew her death was not natural, according to those arrest warrants.

Sixteen hours after announcing Kimrey’s arrest, Onslow County Sheriff Hans Miller said the girl’s body was found by dive teams around 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

The body was in a creek in Pender County about 25 miles (40 kilometers) from the home Mariah shared with Kimrey in Jacksonville, FBI spokeswoman Shelley Lynch said in a statement with few other details. The medical examiner still needs to identify the body, but investigators are confident it is Mariah, Lynch said.

Miller refused to release other details at a news conference.

Mariah’s mother said she last saw her daughter when she put her to bed Sunday night.

Kristy Woods made tearful pleas for her daughter’s return. “This is my world, this is my angel,” she said.

Kimrey, 32, is also charged with obstruction of justice, second-degree burglary, felony larceny and possession of stolen property. Prosecutors are reviewing whether additional charges should be filed.

The statement did not indicate whether Kimrey had a lawyer or if anyone else could also be charged.

Mariah’s father, who has been involved in a custody dispute with her mother, has criticized her version of events.

“Someone just walked right up in there, grabbed the 3-year-old out of the bed and she didn’t cry, she didn’t scream?” Woods told WCTI-TV in New Bern earlier in the week. “Nobody heard anything? Four people in the house, two adults and two kids someone just comes up and snatches the baby and walks out?”

I’m very saddened’: Officials find remains believed to be Mariah Woods

Authorities found remains Saturday evening they believe to be 3-year-old Mariah Woods, according to the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office. 1

Sheriff Hans Miller said investigators recovered a body around 5:30 p.m. Saturday in Shelter Creek along Shaw Highway in Pender County.

A positive confirmation of an identity will be made by the medical examiner’s office.

In a press conference Saturday afternoon, FBI officials called the search for the child, who had been missing since Sunday, a “homicide investigation.” 1

“I’m very saddened to report to you that we have recovered what we believe are the remains of little Mariah Woods,” Miller said. “We were all hoping for a better outcome.”

Search teams expanded the search for the missing Onslow County girl to neighboring Pender County half a day after authorities arrested her mother’s boyfriend in connection to her disappearance.

District Attorney Ernie Lee called the search an extremely challenging and emotional week.

“This investigation continues,” he said. “We’ll be waiting for the results of the medical examiner’s report and making some decisions at that time.”

Mother’s boyfriend charged

The Onslow County Sheriff’s Office and the FBI arrested 32-year-old Earl Kimrey late Friday and charged him with concealing a death, obstruction of justice, second-degree burglary, larceny and possession of stolen property. He was being held in the Onslow County Detention Center on a $1 million bond.

Investigators did not say what led them to suspect Kimrey or what evidence they have that Mariah is dead.

The arrest warrant issued for Kimrey said he obstructed justice by “removing Mariah Woods’ body from the scene of her death and did conceal Mariah Woods’ death and body, knowing that Mariah Woods died from unnatural causes. The defendant acted with deceit and intent to fraud.”

Kimrey “secretly disposed of the dead child’s body,” the warrant said.

State records show Kimrey had previously been charged with a series of lower-level crimes dating back to 2005. Kimrey’s previous charges include larceny, assault and drunk and disorderly conduct, according to the state’s online records.

Since the news of her death, a memorial with flowers and stuffed animals from community members has been started near her home, at 2404 Dawson Cabin Road in Jacksonville.

Angela Wiles, who started the memorial, said she felt compelled to start the memorial so that the community would focus on memorial instead of the suspect arrested for her death.

“I was kind of struggling with the sign and the wood, and a gentleman stopped and asked if I needed help, and that meant a lot of me too,” said Wiles. “The whole community is really coming together. It’s about her. Justice for her and bringing her back home.”

Community members of all ages came to honor and memorialize the little girl. People gathered in prayer for hours Saturday night.

“I was sad for her,” 7-year-old Kiera Ezel said. “I wanted to bring her two gifts.”

Another little girl showed up with her family to place a tiara on the sign, because “Mariah looked like a princess” in the pictures shared with the news.

“It’s impacting our children,” community member Anna Rust said. “Something so tragic has impacted our own children that are still here with us. We just have to hold onto our kids and watch over them.”

“My daughter wanted to give Mariah one of her own teddy bears just to show her that we love her,” said Megan James, who has a three-year-old like Mariah.

Mariah’s parents are divorced, and her father, Alex Woods, said that while his daughter had been living with her mother, his week had been “like hell, like a nightmare.”

Agencies involved in the case include the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office, the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, the Pender County Sheriff’s Office, the Fayetteville Police Department Dive Team, the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, the State Bureau of Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
